Buying a Christmas gift for a gamer is easy if you only need something with a controller printed on it. Finding something that connects with the game they still talk about years later takes a little more thought.

This guide is for people choosing Christmas gifts for gamers who would rather give one meaningful piece than another generic mug, T-shirt or novelty sign. I have grouped the ideas by the sort of person they suit, from 16-bit collectors and GameCube fans to horror players, Pokémon families and people following newer pixel-art games.
Every framed design featured below is handmade to order in my UK workshop. I print and precision-cut the individual pieces, arrange them at different depths, then assemble them inside a wood or vinyl frame with a glass front. Current options, processing times and delivery estimates are shown on the linked Etsy listings, so check those details before ordering for a fixed Christmas deadline.

Eight handmade gaming gifts worth matching to the right person
1. Mega Man X for the 16-bit action-game expert

Mega Man X is a strong choice for someone who knows exactly why the jump from the original Mega Man games felt exciting. The opening-stage city scene has movement, machinery and a hero whose blue armour stands out immediately against the background. In layered form, the platforms, enemies and skyline create real depth instead of imitating it on a flat page.
Best for: SNES collectors, action-platform fans and somebody building a focused retro games room. See the current Mega Man X shadow box on Etsy.
2. Luigi’s Mansion for the GameCube fan who likes playful horror

Luigi’s Mansion works because it is spooky without losing Nintendo’s sense of humour. Luigi looks nervous, the ghosts look delighted with themselves and the deep mansion setting gives the separated pieces somewhere to recede. It is a nostalgic gaming gift that can stay on display after Halloween rather than feeling tied to one night of the year.
Best for: GameCube owners, Luigi fans and people who like their horror colourful rather than grim. View the Luigi’s Mansion shadow box on Etsy.
3. Splatterhouse Biggy Man for the serious retro-horror collector

This one is not the safe all-purpose present, which is precisely why it can be the right gift. Biggy Man’s twin chainsaws, Rick Taylor’s stance and the purple forest create a very specific piece of arcade-horror history. Choose it for somebody who already knows Splatterhouse, not simply because they once mentioned horror games.
Best for: Namco arcade fans, horror-game collectors and rooms where the graphic imagery will be welcome. See the Splatterhouse Biggy Man artwork on Etsy.
4. A custom Pokémon battle for a genuinely personal Christmas gift

The most personal design in this guide is the one the buyer helps create. You choose the two Pokémon that will face one another, even if they come from different generations. That can mean childhood rivals, one favourite for each sibling, or a parent-and-child pairing that connects two different eras of the series.
The scene is based around a fuller FireRed and LeafGreen-style forest battle. Trees, bushes, platforms, interface panels and both chosen Pokémon sit in separate layers. Read the full custom Pokémon battle shadow-box feature if you want to see how the choices and construction work.
Best for: couples, siblings, Pokémon families and anyone with a pairing that means something. Create a custom Pokémon battle on Etsy.
5. Deltarune Chapter 3 for a modern pixel-art fan

Not every nostalgic gaming gift has to come from the 1980s or 1990s. Deltarune uses pixel art to build a very modern, strange and theatrical world. The Chapter 3 TV Time scene brings together Kris, Susie and Ralsei at their podiums, Tenna in presenter mode and the audience across the foreground.
Best for: Deltarune players, indie-game fans and somebody who values character-driven pixel art. You can read my making feature about the TV Time shadow box or view the current Etsy listing.
6. Wind Waker and the Great Wave for somebody who loves game art

This is the choice for someone who notices art direction as much as gameplay. Wind Waker’s cel-shaded forms already have a bold, printed quality, while the Great Wave-inspired composition gives Link and the King of Red Lions a sweeping wall-art silhouette. It can sit comfortably in a living room or study without looking like a conventional merchandise display.
Best for: Zelda fans, illustrators, designers and grown-up gaming rooms. Explore the visual idea in my Wind Waker shadow-box article, then check the current Etsy options.
7. Super Mario World for broad, cheerful Nintendo nostalgia

Some games need no complicated explanation. Super Mario World is colourful, readable and tied to the Christmas when many players first met the SNES. Yoshi, floating blocks, coins, platforms and pipes also lend themselves naturally to separate physical layers.
Best for: Nintendo families, SNES owners and a recipient whose exact niche is difficult to establish. See how the scene was adapted in my Super Mario World pixel-art feature, or view it on Etsy.
8. Classic DOOM for the PC gamer who remembers the shareware years

Classic DOOM is ideal for the person who remembers installing games from discs, swapping shareware and learning every corridor of a level. The first-person weapon, advancing demons and face-filled HUD create several visual planes, so the scene gains depth without losing the original game’s hard-edged look.
Best for: classic PC players, FPS collectors and darker gaming-room displays. Read the DOOM shadow-box article or see the live Etsy listing.
How to choose without spoiling the surprise
- Look at the games already on display. A worn cartridge, framed poster or frequently used avatar is better evidence than a vague claim to like “retro games”.
- Ask about a console generation. Knowing whether their strongest memories come from the SNES, Mega Drive, GameCube or early PC era quickly narrows the choice.
- Check the room, not only the game. Bright Nintendo art and graphic horror pieces suit very different walls.
- Measure available space. A desk, narrow shelf and feature wall require different frame sizes.
- For a custom design, confirm the details quietly. A friend or family member may know the exact Pokémon pairing without revealing the present.

Ordering handmade video game gifts for Christmas
Handmade does not mean sitting ready in a warehouse. I make each shadow box after it is ordered, so the processing estimate on Etsy matters just as much as the delivery estimate. Seasonal volume can change those timings. If you are buying close to Christmas, check the individual listing rather than relying on an estimate remembered from another product.
Frame colours and size combinations can also vary. Most designs are offered in black, white or grey and in several square sizes, but the live listing is the source of truth for the options available today. Gift messages are welcome where shown on the listing, which is useful when the order is travelling directly to the recipient.
Christmas gaming gift FAQs
What is a good Christmas gift for a gamer who already owns everything?
Choose something connected to a particular game, scene or shared memory rather than another piece of hardware. Personalised art or a handmade display piece can celebrate what they already love without competing with a collection they have spent years building.
Are these shadow boxes flat prints?
No. The characters, scenery and interface elements are printed on cardstock, precision-cut and assembled at different depths inside the frame. The shadows between those pieces are physical.
Can I send the gift directly to the recipient?
Check the live Etsy listing for the current gift-message option and delivery estimate. If a printed message is available, include the sender’s name so the recipient knows who the parcel is from.
Which frame colour is safest as a gift?
Black is the easiest match for most gaming rooms and makes bright pixel art stand out. White can suit a lighter home interior, while grey sits between the two. Look at the recipient’s existing frames and furniture if you can.
