A custom Pokémon battle shadow box lets you put any two Pokémon into the same handmade battle scene. The current example shows Charizard facing Blastoise, but that pairing is only the starting point. You can choose two favourites from the same generation, bring together characters from completely different games, or turn a shared Pokémon memory into a one-of-a-kind gift.
A New, More Detailed Pokémon Battle Design
This is a substantial redesign of my earlier FireRed and LeafGreen battle frame. The old version used a clean, simple battle-screen layout. The new version builds a much richer world around the characters, with trees, bushes, foliage, platforms, battle panels, menus and the Pokémon logo all separated into their own physical layers.
The scene graphics come from actual Pokémon games, so the result still feels authentic to the series. I have combined and arranged those game elements into an enhanced forest battle scene, rather than inventing scenery that does not belong in that world. It feels familiar at first glance, but there is far more depth and detail when you look closely.
Choose Any Two Pokémon
The main custom choice is simple: pick Pokémon A and Pokémon B. They do not need to come from the same game, region or generation. You could choose a classic Red, Blue or Yellow pairing, mix a Gold or Silver favourite with a Ruby or Sapphire starter, or bring together Pokémon from Diamond and Pearl, Sword and Shield, or Scarlet and Violet.
That freedom is what makes the piece personal. It can recreate a familiar rivalry, represent two family members, mark the Pokémon each partner always chooses, or simply put two favourites into a battle that never happened on screen.
How I Build the Layered Battle Scene
I make each frame to order from printed cardstock, glass, wood and vinyl. The background forest sits deepest in the frame. Bushes and platforms move forward in stages, followed by the interface panels, logo and chosen Pokémon. Carefully controlled spacing keeps the battle screen readable while allowing light to create genuine shadows between the layers.
The character sprites need particular care. Their stepped pixel outlines make inaccurate cuts very obvious, so each silhouette is precision cut, checked and aligned by hand. The health panels and menu graphics also need to sit squarely because even a small shift can make a familiar game interface look wrong.
A Personalised Pokémon Gift With a Story
A personalised Pokémon gift works best when the pairing has a reason behind it. Instead of giving someone a generic character print, you can choose a battle that reflects the people receiving it and the games they grew up with.
Classic Rivals
Charizard versus Blastoise is an obvious example, but the idea can go much further. Choose the two Pokémon that always divided opinion in your friendship group, or recreate the matchup you argued about in the playground.
Brother, Sister and Sibling Gifts
For siblings, each person can choose one Pokémon. The frame then becomes a shared keepsake rather than a gift centred on only one favourite. It is especially good for brothers and sisters who played different versions, traded creatures or competed over who had the stronger team.
Parent-and-Child Pokémon Gifts
Pokémon now spans several generations of players. A parent might choose the partner they remember from Red or Blue, while their child chooses a favourite from Sword, Shield, Scarlet or Violet. Putting both into one scene turns that age difference into the point of the artwork.
Couples, Anniversaries and Valentine’s Day
For a couple, the two characters can represent each partner. Choose the Pokémon you each used, two complementary favourites, or a deliberately mismatched pair that only makes sense to you. It gives an anniversary or Valentine’s Day gift a personal story without relying on names or a date printed across the artwork.
Frame Colours and Sizes
The shadow box is available in black, white or grey frames. Approximate size options are 8, 9, 10.5 and 12.7 inches. The larger sizes give the layered forest and battle interface more presence, while the smaller frame works well on a desk, shelf or compact gamer-room wall. No. The scene is built from separate printed cardstock pieces, cut and spaced inside a deep frame. The shadows and depth are physical, not a printed 3D effect.
